Stepping up in Swatch's range
Swatch produced only fourteen solar-powered models across the mid-nineties, and the SRM100 was among them — a genuinely small run for a brand whose annual output ran into the tens of millions. The movement charges a capacitor rather than a battery, drawing power from ambient light and driving the seconds hand only when illumination is present; a watch that stops in the dark and restarts in the light is an odd, quietly compelling thing to own. The dial dispenses with most decoration to let the solar cell structure show through, with six Roman numerals doing the minimum necessary work around it. At 33mm it sits where Swatch's standard Gent case always did — unobtrusive, light, period-correct in proportions. This one has remained unworn since leaving the factory, which for a thirty-year-old capacitor-driven movement with a brown leather strap is both its appeal and its caveat: the strap should be handled carefully, and the watch is better understood as an object than as daily wear.

Frequently asked questions, and things you should know about this watch
Will the glass scratch?
It can, over time. Mineral glass handles daily wear but will pick up fine scratches that sapphire would not.
Does it need a battery?
No. It charges from light, and the cell behind that is designed to last a decade or more.
Is it a men's or women's watch?
Listed as unisex, and at this size it suits any wrist that takes the dimensions.
