The Happy Sport began in 1993 as a deliberate provocation: Caroline Scheufele put diamonds inside a steel sports watch at a moment when the industry considered the two materials mutually exclusive. The five diamonds here float freely between the dial and the crystal, held in neither setting nor adhesive, moving with the wrist. After thirty years that detail still reads as an idea rather than an ornament. The pink sunburst dial shifts with the light — deeper at the centre, brightening toward the edge — and the rhodium-plated Roman numerals sit cleanly against it without competing for attention. The crown is set with a single pink sapphire, a small coordination between the metal and the colour that becomes visible the moment it is pointed out and is hard to unsee afterwards. The date falls between four and five o'clock, which keeps it out of the dial's most visible quarter.

Frequently asked questions, and things you should know about this watch
Can I swim with it?
No. At 30m it will survive rain and handwashing, but not submersion of any kind.
Will the glass scratch?
Unlikely. Sapphire is second only to diamond in hardness and shrugs off everyday marking.
Does it need a battery?
Yes. It is quartz, so expect a battery change every two to three years at a jeweller.
Is it a men's or women's watch?
Listed as women's, though at 36mm it sits in the range that suits anyone.
Cheapest place to buy
Goldsmiths is the only UK retailer we track stocking this reference, so there is nothing to compare it against today.
Who are Goldsmiths?
Goldsmiths has been selling watches in Britain since 1778 and is part of the Watches of Switzerland Group, which is listed on the London Stock Exchange. They are an authorised dealer, so a watch comes with the manufacturer’s own warranty.
