Stepping up in Chopard's range
Chopard has been the official timekeeper of the Mille Miglia since 1988, a partnership that gave this collection its reason to exist rather than simply borrowing racing iconography from a distance. The Classic Chronograph is the line's most directly vintage-flavoured expression, pulling its proportions and pusher design — mushroom-shaped, in the manner of period chronographs — from the era when the race itself ran on open Italian roads. The Verde Chiaro dial reads quite differently across the day: a soft, pale green in flat light that deepens noticeably in shade, with Arabic numerals and three sub-dials arranged in a layout that would not look out of place on a 1950s dash-mounted timer. That lacquered surface has a circular satin finish which keeps the dial from reading as flat. Lucent Steel, Chopard's own alloy, is noticeably more reflective than standard stainless, which sharpens the contrast between the polished and brushed surfaces of the case. The perforated calfskin strap is a considered detail — the perforation pattern references racing gloves rather than racing seats, and it works with the brown tone to keep the whole thing warm rather than cold. The movement inside is COSC-certified and runs a 54-hour reserve, enough that a weekend watch left off on Friday evening is still running Monday morning. The exhibition caseback lets the rotor show, and on a chronograph movement carrying that certification, there is something to look at.

Frequently asked questions, and things you should know about this watch
Can I swim with it?
Showering yes, swimming no. 50m covers splashes and brief immersion, but a swimming stroke generates well above the pressure that figure describes.
Will the glass scratch?
Unlikely. Sapphire is second only to diamond in hardness and shrugs off everyday marking.
Does it need a battery?
No. It is automatic — the motion of your wrist winds it, and there is no cell to replace.
How long does it run for when it's not worn?
About 54 hours fully wound — enough to survive a night off the wrist, but not a full weekend.
Is it a men's or women's watch?
Listed as men's.
Cheapest place to buy
Goldsmiths is the only UK retailer we track stocking this reference, so there is nothing to compare it against today.
Who are Goldsmiths?
Goldsmiths has been selling watches in Britain since 1778 and is part of the Watches of Switzerland Group, which is listed on the London Stock Exchange. They are an authorised dealer, so a watch comes with the manufacturer’s own warranty.
