Bvlgari Octo Finissimo 33mm Quartz Mens Watch

The octagonal case geometry traces directly to the Maxentius Basilica in Rome — the coffered vault structure that Bvlgari's designers used as the architectural brief for the entire Octo line. This reference, introduced at Baselworld 2017, pushes that idea as far as titanium and movement engineering allow: the BVL 138 calibre inside measures 2.23mm thick, wound by a platinum micro-rotor small enough to sit flush within the movement rather than above it, and the whole assembly reaches just 5.15mm overall. That is thin enough to disappear under a dress shirt cuff without the case catching on the fabric. The sandblasted titanium does something most grey dials do not: it removes reflection entirely, from the case, the dial and the hands together, so the watch reads as a single matte plane rather than a collection of surfaces. The hands and markers carry no luminous material, which is consistent with that intention — this is a watch designed around form and worn in light. The caseback reveals the BVL 138 finished with Côtes de Genève stripes and perlage on the main plate, the kind of decoration that belongs to watches costing considerably more to produce than their exterior suggests.

Sotirio Bulgari was a silversmith from a village in Epirus who arrived in Rome and opened a shop on Via Sistina in 1884, later moving to the Via Condotti address the company still occupies. The Latinised V in the logo is a deliberate reference to classical Rome, and the house has drawn on Roman architecture and coinage ever since.
Two designs define it. The Serpenti, a coiled snake bracelet watch that first appeared in the 1940s, is the piece most associated with the name. The Bvlgari Bvlgari of 1975, with the brand name doubled around the bezel in the manner of a Roman coin inscription, began as a limited run for clients and became a permanent line.
Watchmaking became serious in 2000, when Bvlgari bought Gérald Genta and Daniel Roth and with them a genuine complications capability. Since 2014 the Octo Finissimo has set a series of world records for thinness across different complications — tourbillon, minute repeater, automatic, chronograph — which is not the sort of thing a jeweller was expected to be doing.
