The Boy·Friend takes its octagonal case geometry from two sources simultaneously: the layout of Place Vendôme and the cap of a bottle of No. 5. That is not a loose association — the eight-sided form was drawn deliberately to sit between those references, and the result is a watch that reads as jewellery without abandoning legibility. At 7.7mm thick, it lies remarkably flat against the wrist for a piece of this ambition, and the black guilloché dial rewards the kind of attention a flat watch invites. The running seconds sits at six o'clock with enough presence to be useful without pulling the eye from the dial's texture. The crown, set with a polished black onyx cabochon, is the detail that announces how seriously Chanel took the finishing at this scale — it transforms a functional component into a deliberate full stop. The 42-hour manual reserve asks the wearer to wind it every day or so, which some find a pleasure and others a discipline. The black alligator strap and the onyx crown make that daily ritual feel considered rather than obligatory.

Learn more about Chanel

Gabrielle Chanel opened her first shop in 1910 and spent the following decades removing things from women's clothing — corsetry, ornament, the assumption that formality required discomfort. The jersey suit, the little black dress and No. 5 came from that.

The watches are made in-house, not licensed. Chanel opened its own watch manufacture in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1993 and has since taken stakes in the movement maker Kenissi, giving it access to genuinely serious mechanics.

Two designs define the output. The Première of 1987 took its octagonal case from the stopper of the No. 5 bottle and its chain-and-leather bracelet from the quilted handbag. The J12 of 2000 was made almost entirely from high-tech ceramic at a time when almost nobody was doing it, and it changed what a fashion house's watch could be taken seriously as.

More recently the Monsieur and the Code Coco have carried in-house calibres, including a jumping-hour movement developed by Chanel itself.

The company remains privately owned by the Wertheimer family.

Frequently asked questions, and things you should know about this watch

Can I swim with it?

No. At 30m it will survive rain and handwashing, but not submersion of any kind.

Will the glass scratch?

Unlikely. Sapphire is second only to diamond in hardness and shrugs off everyday marking.

Does it need a battery?

No. It is hand-wound, so it needs winding every day or two but never a battery.

How long does it run for when it's not worn?

About 42 hours fully wound — enough to survive a night off the wrist, but not a full weekend.

Is it a men's or women's watch?

Listed as women's.

Cheapest place to buy

Goldsmiths at £3,095, ex-display. No UK retailer we track lists this reference new.

Is this available new?

Not from the UK retailers we track. This reference is listed as ex-display only, at £3,095 from Goldsmiths. Ex-display watches are unworn shop stock rather than second-hand — sold below the recommended retail price, and with the manufacturer’s guarantee intact.

Who are Goldsmiths?

Goldsmiths has been selling watches in Britain since 1778 and is part of the Watches of Switzerland Group, which is listed on the London Stock Exchange. They are an authorised dealer, so a watch comes with the manufacturer’s own warranty.
