The fēnix E sits at an interesting point in Garmin's hierarchy: launched alongside the fēnix 8 as a more accessible entry into that family, it carries the Elevate Gen 4 heart rate sensor and the same 1.3-inch AMOLED display as the Epix Gen 2 it effectively replaces, while running Garmin's current mapping and training software. The result is a capable outdoor computer that inherits the serious hardware without the flagship price. Gary Burrell and Min Kao founded Garmin in 1989 — the name is a contraction of their first names — to build GPS receivers for aviation and marine use. Consumer navigation came later, and wearables later still.
