The case is chrome-plated and intricately patterned, which is as much about the moment of opening as about any view of the watch from a distance. That moment is where the dial does its work. Roman numerals run around a white chapter ring, but the centre of the dial is cut away to show the gear train beneath — the skeleton aperture and the white surround read as a composition rather than either element alone. The movement is a 17-jewel hand-wound calibre that wants winding daily, which suits the pocket watch ritual: the watch comes out, it is read, it is wound, it goes back. It is carried on a chrome-plated Albert chain with a buttonhole clip rather than worn on the wrist, and the chain is matched to the case — the two pieces arrive as a set.
