The Update adds a date in the most unconventional way available: a peripheral ring running around the very edge of the dial, with two neon green SuperLuminova markers bracketing the current date. The mechanism is patented and adjusts in both directions without risk of damage, which in practice makes setting the date feel more considered than the usual crown-forward routine. At 40.5mm the case reads larger than earlier Tangente references, but the DUW 6101 inside — 3.6mm of automatic movement built to Glashütte standards, with the proprietary swing system escapement and Glashütte ribbing on the bridges — keeps total thickness to 7.8mm. That is flatter than most dress watches at this diameter, and it means the watch disappears under a cuff in a way automatics with date complications rarely manage. The midnight blue dial shifts in character as light changes, reading almost black under low light, where the time hands carry no lume at all — only the date ring glows, which is a deliberate and honest hierarchy of what this watch considers important at 2am. The Horween Shell Cordovan strap has a rembordé edge that holds its shape over time rather than fraying at the corners as cut leather tends to do.

Roland Schwertner, a photographer and computer technician from Düsseldorf with no watchmaking background, registered Nomos in Glashütte in January 1990 — two months after the Berlin Wall fell and before German reunification was complete. The town's watchmaking infrastructure had been state-owned for four decades and was suddenly available.
The design language was settled from the start and has barely moved: Bauhaus in the strict sense, drawing on the Dessau school's functionalism. Sans-serif numerals, no applied ornament, no unnecessary line, and dial layouts where every element earns its place. The Tangente, one of the first models, remains the flagship and looks the same today.
The technical ambition came later and was considerable for a company of its size. Nomos moved from modified Swiss ébauches to its own Alpha calibre, then to the DUW family, and in 2014 introduced the swing system — a proprietary escapement with an in-house hairspring, the component almost no independent manufacturer makes. Fewer than a dozen companies worldwide produce their own hairsprings.
The house is still independent, still based in a converted railway station in Glashütte, with design offices in Berlin. It occupies unusual territory: in-house movements and German finishing at prices closer to Swiss mid-range brands using bought-in calibres, which has made it the most common entry point into serious German watchmaking.
