Stepping up in the same colour and case shape

The Bambino has been Orient's calling card for dress watches at the accessible end of the market for decades, and the move to a 38.4mm case in 2022 was a deliberate correction — the older, larger versions sat awkwardly on anything but a broad wrist. At 44mm lug to lug, this one fits a much wider range of wrists and carries itself as a dress watch should: present without being loud. The sunburst green dial graduates in a way that makes it read quite differently under a desk lamp than it does in daylight, shifting from something close to forest through to a brighter grass tone depending on the angle. Applied indices and dauphine hands keep the face clean. On the wrist, 110 grams on a steel bracelet is noticeable but not heavy for the size, and the deployant clasp with dual push-button releases makes daily use considerably more convenient than the leather-strap versions. The exhibition caseback is the detail worth pausing on. The F6724 — Orient's own movement, assembled in Japan — runs at 21,600vph and can be wound by hand if the watch has been sitting unworn, which is a more useful feature than it might first appear on a 40-hour reserve.

Orient began in 1950 as Tama Keiki, successor to a Tokyo watch business Shogoro Yoshida had started in 1901. It became Orient Watch Company the following year and set out to do something few companies attempt: build complete mechanical movements in-house, at prices aimed at ordinary buyers.

That is still the point of the brand. Orient designs and manufactures its own calibres rather than buying Swiss ébauches, which is why an Orient automatic can cost less than a quartz watch from a fashion label while containing a movement the company made itself.

The Bambino made the case to a wider audience — a domed-crystal dress automatic at a price that embarrassed a lot of more expensive watches — and the Kamasu and Mako divers did the same for tool watches.

Orient Star sits above the main line, with higher finishing, power-reserve indicators and in-house calibres of greater complexity.

The company became a subsidiary of Seiko Epson in 2009 and remains one, which gives it manufacturing depth while leaving the identity distinct from Seiko's own.
