The Mako name has been central to Orient's sports catalogue since the 1960s, and this chronograph represents its most capable iteration — pairing the dive-ready case architecture with solar power and a stopwatch function that the original never had. The VS752 movement comes from Seiko Epson's supply chain and carries one of the better reputations in solar quartz: it charges from artificial indoor light as readily as direct sun, and a full reserve runs for six months without seeing either. What makes the case work better than its 42.8mm footprint might suggest is the 48.1mm lug-to-lug span — unusually compact for a diver of this rating, and the reason the curved lugs settle onto the wrist rather than bridging it. The red sunburst dial is arranged as a reverse panda, with black subdials pulling contrast away from the main field; in angled light the red shifts depth considerably. At 167 grams on the bracelet it is a watch you are aware of, though the clasp's micro-adjustment facility on the folding mechanism means fit is easier to dial in than on most steel sports bracelets.

Orient began in 1950 as Tama Keiki, successor to a Tokyo watch business Shogoro Yoshida had started in 1901. It became Orient Watch Company the following year and set out to do something few companies attempt: build complete mechanical movements in-house, at prices aimed at ordinary buyers.

That is still the point of the brand. Orient designs and manufactures its own calibres rather than buying Swiss ébauches, which is why an Orient automatic can cost less than a quartz watch from a fashion label while containing a movement the company made itself.

The Bambino made the case to a wider audience — a domed-crystal dress automatic at a price that embarrassed a lot of more expensive watches — and the Kamasu and Mako divers did the same for tool watches.

Orient Star sits above the main line, with higher finishing, power-reserve indicators and in-house calibres of greater complexity.

The company became a subsidiary of Seiko Epson in 2009 and remains one, which gives it manufacturing depth while leaving the identity distinct from Seiko's own.
