Seiko Speedtimer ‘Maximum Precision’ 8R Mechanical Chronograph 42mm Mens Watch
Ref. 182800000016
Sits in Seiko’s upper tier here — more premium than three quarters of the Seiko watches we list, which start at £110.
Price range £110 to £3,550 across 106 Seiko watches in stock. The original Speedtimer, launched in 1969, was the first automatic chronograph to combine a column wheel with a vertical clutch — the two mechanisms that have since become the standard by which serious chronograph movements are judged. The 8R48 carries that same architecture forward: the vertical clutch eliminates the hand-judder that plagues lesser chronographs at the moment the pusher is pressed, the column wheel governs each start, stop and reset with mechanical precision, and a three-pointed hammer returns all hands to zero simultaneously rather than in sequence. These are not marketing distinctions; they are the difference between a chronograph that reads cleanly and one that introduces its own error. On the wrist the black dial works in favour of legibility rather than drama — the sub-dials are finished differently from the main dial surface, so the eye separates them without effort, which matters when the watch is actually running. The tachymeter on the bezel is there to be used, and the hard coating means it will still be readable after the kind of use that justifies having one.
