Stepping up in Swatch's range
The GK140 came from Swatch's maritime collection for Spring/Summer 1992, a series built around nautical graphics rather than diving credentials. Anchor and rope-knot motifs run across the dial, rendered in gold against the blue and white patterning that defined the Sailor's Edition — decorative intent stated plainly from the outset. The transparent resin case lets the gold mirror dial read from the side as much as the front, which gives the watch a quality unusual for the format: it catches light at angles a solid case would absorb. At 34mm it sits on the wrist as Swatch always intended the Gent to — genuinely unisex, scaling easily across different wrists without making a point of it. Thirty-odd years in storage means the silicone strap should be treated as a display piece rather than a working one; aged polymer at this age can crack under tension. The dial itself, unworn, retains the mirror finish that these often lose to handling.

Frequently asked questions, and things you should know about this watch
Will the glass scratch?
Yes, but it polishes out. Acrylic marks easily and a scratch can be buffed away at home, which is why vintage-style watches still use it.
Does it need a battery?
Yes. It is quartz, so expect a battery change every two to three years at a jeweller.
What size strap does it take?
17mm. Any strap of that width will fit, and on most modern watches quick-release bars make the swap a two-minute job with no tools.
Will it fit my wrist?
Lug-to-lug is 39.2mm, which suits wrists from roughly 15cm (6 inches) upward.
Lug-to-lug decides fit more than case diameter does.
Is it a men's or women's watch?
Listed as unisex, and at this size it suits any wrist that takes the dimensions.
