Introduced in 1971 as the successor to the 7031/0, the 7149/0 earned it honestly: the contrasting sub-dial rings, the orange accents and the tachymeter bezel together produce something that genuinely resembles a roulette wheel, and the name stuck. The mechanical step forward mattered as much as the visual one — the Valjoux 234 that replaced the 7734 brought a column wheel to the chronograph mechanism and ran at 21,600 beats per hour, both of which meant a more precise and more satisfying movement to operate, though the curb pin regulator will need a watchmaker's attention over time to stay in trim. At 39.5mm across and 47mm lug to lug, the case sits in a range that most wrists take without difficulty, but the 14mm height and the dome of the acrylic crystal give it a presence on the wrist that the diameter alone does not suggest. The crown guards are substantial, the screw-down chronograph pushers add to the purposeful silhouette, and the grey dial reads clearly behind the vintage acrylic in a way that a flat mineral crystal would not quite replicate. The Oyster folded-link bracelet is period-correct and adjusts by moving the spring bars within the clasp — slow and deliberate, in keeping with a watch that has no interest in being quick about anything.

Tudor exists because Hans Wilsdorf wanted to sell a Rolex to people who could not afford one. He registered the name in 1926 and relaunched it properly in 1946 as a separate company: Rolex cases, Rolex bracelets, Rolex crowns, but bought-in movements — usually ETA — at a fraction of the price.
For decades this made Tudor the practical choice for organisations buying in bulk. The French Marine Nationale issued Submariners to its divers. The US Navy tested them. Tudor's military history is arguably richer than Rolex's, because navies bought Tudors.
The watches developed their own identity regardless. The snowflake hands fitted to Submariners from 1969, specified by the French navy for legibility, became a signature the brand still uses. The Monte Carlo chronographs of the early 1970s, with their orange and blue dials, look nothing like anything Rolex made.
The brand withdrew from the US market in 1996 and spent a decade in relative obscurity before returning in 2013 with the Heritage Black Bay, which mined the archive rather than chasing modernity. It worked. Tudor now develops its own movements through a partnership with Kenissi, supplies calibres to Breitling, and holds METAS Master Chronometer certification — a technical position it never had when it was simply the affordable Rolex.
