Stepping up in the same colour and case shape
The Black Bay S&G arrived at Baselworld 2017 as Tudor's clearest statement about what the Black Bay could become when its mid-century DNA was taken seriously rather than loosely referenced. The matte black dial with gold indices and minute track is a direct revival of the gilt dials that defined tool watches of the 1950s and 1960s, and Tudor reinforced that intention by using solid 18ct yellow gold for the bezel and end links rather than plating — the crown and inner bracelet links are gold-capped to a thickness of 0.3mm to 0.6mm, which is meaningfully more durable than surface treatment. The MT5612 movement inside is COSC-certified, built with a silicon balance spring that shrugs off magnetic fields, and carries a 70-hour power reserve — useful if the watch rotates off the wrist for a long weekend. At 14.8mm thick the case is substantial, but tapered lugs and a flat caseback pull it closer to the wrist than the numbers suggest, and it will slide under a dress cuff more readily than most watches of this rating and build. The riveted two-tone bracelet, with its stepped faux-rivet flanks echoing 1950s architecture, fastens via a deployant clasp with ceramic ball bearings and micro-adjustments built into the shell — a small detail that matters on a bracelet worn daily across changing temperatures.

Tudor exists because Hans Wilsdorf wanted to sell a Rolex to people who could not afford one. He registered the name in 1926 and relaunched it properly in 1946 as a separate company: Rolex cases, Rolex bracelets, Rolex crowns, but bought-in movements — usually ETA — at a fraction of the price.
For decades this made Tudor the practical choice for organisations buying in bulk. The French Marine Nationale issued Submariners to its divers. The US Navy tested them. Tudor's military history is arguably richer than Rolex's, because navies bought Tudors.
The watches developed their own identity regardless. The snowflake hands fitted to Submariners from 1969, specified by the French navy for legibility, became a signature the brand still uses. The Monte Carlo chronographs of the early 1970s, with their orange and blue dials, look nothing like anything Rolex made.
The brand withdrew from the US market in 1996 and spent a decade in relative obscurity before returning in 2013 with the Heritage Black Bay, which mined the archive rather than chasing modernity. It worked. Tudor now develops its own movements through a partnership with Kenissi, supplies calibres to Breitling, and holds METAS Master Chronometer certification — a technical position it never had when it was simply the affordable Rolex.
