The Grand Lange 1 Moon Phase "Lumen" began as a question: could a Lange carry a genuinely luminous moonphase and outsize date? The answer, delivered in a limited run of 200 pieces in 2016, required rethinking the dial from the ground up. Rather than a conventional painted or lacquered surface, the dial is built around a smoked sapphire crystal layer that is semi-transparent to ultraviolet light. UV passes through it and charges the luminous elements beneath — the outsize date, the moonphase, the hands, the power-reserve markers — so that the watch glows in darkness without any of those elements being exposed to light directly. The outsize date achieves this through a glass units disc with printed numerals rotating over a luminous background, while the tens cross carries its own luminous coating; both are charged even before the date advances. On the wrist, the asymmetric layout inherited from the original Lange 1 of the 1990s reads as a composed arrangement of distinct zones rather than a cluttered dial. In daylight the smoked sapphire layer reveals the perlage finish of the plate below it, giving the dial a quiet depth that changes with the angle of the light. At 9.5mm thick for a watch doing this much, it sits closer to the wrist than the complication count might suggest. Through the caseback, the L095.4 fills nearly the entire visible area: German silver plates, a hand-engraved balance cock, gold chatons, and flame-blued screws that reward the attention of anyone who turns it over.

Ferdinand Adolph Lange founded his workshop in Glashütte in 1845, in a Saxon mining town whose silver had run out and whose population was destitute. He did not join a watchmaking industry there; he built one, training local labour and introducing the metric system to movement production. The house developed the traits that still define it: the three-quarter plate, which braces the gear train under a single expanse of untreated German silver; hand-engraved balance cocks, each one different because each is cut by a person; and screwed gold chatons securing the jewels. In 1948 the Soviet administration expropriated the company and folded it into the state combine that became Glashütte Uhrenbetriebe. The name vanished from watchmaking for forty-two years. Walter Lange, great-grandson of the founder, re-registered the marque in December 1990, weeks after reunification, in partnership with Günter Blümlein. Four years of development followed with nothing to sell. The 1994 relaunch presented four watches, among them the Lange 1 — off-centre dial, outsize date borrowed from the Semper Opera's five-minute clock — which established the modern house in a single object. Richemont acquired the brand in 2000. Output remains deliberately small, in the low thousands annually, and every movement is still assembled twice.
