Stepping up in Bremont's range
The Solo line's LC designation is not decorative. It honours Lettice Curtis, the first woman to fly four-engine heavy bombers for the Air Transport Auxiliary during the Second World War — a figure whose story Bremont has made a founding part of what these watches are about. That lineage gives a 34mm dress watch a particular weight, and the applied Roman numerals at the quarters are the one flourish that marks the dial out from the broader Solo family. The Trip-Tick case is what separates Bremont from most watchmakers operating at this size: the middle section of the case is hardened to 2,000 Vickers through an aerospace-derived process, which is closer to what you would find on an instrument casing than a polished bracelet watch. At 10.7mm thick it still slips under a shirt cuff cleanly, and the white dial against polished steel reads as uncluttered in any light. The sapphire above it carries nine layers of anti-reflective coating on both faces, which keeps it readable at oblique angles without any of the green or blue wash that single-sided treatments leave. The caseback is worth a glance: a flat exhibition crystal held by four screws reveals the decorated rotor of the chronometer-rated BE-92AV, an automatic movement built to ISO 3159 tolerances. It is not a movement Bremont makes in-house, but it is one they have regulated and certified, and the 42-hour reserve means a weekend off the wrist will not leave you resetting on Monday morning.

Nick and Giles English founded Bremont in 2002, four years after their father died in a plane crash that Nick survived. All three had restored and flown vintage aircraft together, and the brand that emerged is inseparable from that. The name comes from Antoine Bremont, a French farmer who sheltered the brothers after an emergency landing.
Bremont set out to rebuild British watchmaking, which had effectively ended in the twentieth century. The early watches used Swiss movements in British-designed cases, with the Trip-Tick three-part case construction and a hardened outer barrel treated to over 2000 Vickers.
The military and aviation work is real rather than thematic. Bremont holds contracts with squadrons across the RAF, the US Air Force, and other services, producing issued watches for specific units, and has made watches for Martin-Baker ejection seat survivors — tested to the ejection forces themselves.
The company has also built watches incorporating material from historical objects: oak and copper from HMS Victory, aluminium from the Wright Flyer, and steel from Bletchley Park.
The manufacturing ambition advanced with the opening of a facility in Henley and the release of the ENG300 series in 2021, the first Bremont movement designed and largely made in England. Production is in the low tens of thousands annually.
