The Happy Sport began in 1993 as a deliberate provocation: fine diamonds set free to move rather than fixed in place, bobbing between two layers of sapphire above the dial. That idea — that something precious could also be playful — became one of the more durable design arguments of the past thirty years, and this 33mm automatic version carries it forward with Chopard's own in-house calibre, developed specifically to fit the proportions of a smaller case. The five diamonds do their work best in motion, catching light at angles a static stone never would, and the guilloché centre gives the rest of the dial enough texture to hold attention when the wrist is still. Lucent Steel — Chopard's proprietary alloy, produced to a responsible sourcing standard — polishes to a depth that ordinary stainless steel does not quite reach, and the diamond-set bezel sits flush with it rather than disrupting the line of the case. The deep blue alligator strap is the one strong colour note, and it is the right one against silver. The sapphire caseback makes the 09.01-C visible from the outside — worth knowing for a movement Chopard engineered in-house for exactly this case geometry, running at 25,200 vph with a 42-hour reserve.

Frequently asked questions, and things you should know about this watch

Can I swim with it?

No. At 30m it will survive rain and handwashing, but not submersion of any kind.

Will the glass scratch?

Unlikely. Sapphire is second only to diamond in hardness and shrugs off everyday marking.

Does it need a battery?

No. It is automatic — the motion of your wrist winds it, and there is no cell to replace.

How long does it run for when it's not worn?

About 42 hours fully wound — enough to survive a night off the wrist, but not a full weekend.

Is it a men's or women's watch?

Listed as women's.

Cheapest place to buy

Goldsmiths is the only UK retailer we track stocking this reference, so there is nothing to compare it against today.

Who are Goldsmiths?

Goldsmiths has been selling watches in Britain since 1778 and is part of the Watches of Switzerland Group, which is listed on the London Stock Exchange. They are an authorised dealer, so a watch comes with the manufacturer’s own warranty.
