The Venu 3S is the direct successor to the Venu 2S, and the generational step is meaningful: an improved heart rate sensor, a built-in speaker and microphone for calls from the wrist, dedicated sleep coaching, and a wheelchair user mode that tracks pushes rather than steps make this a more considered piece of health hardware than its predecessor. The AMOLED display runs with an optional always-on mode and sits behind Corning Gorilla Glass 3 rather than standard mineral glass. At 41mm and 40 grams including the strap, it sits closer to a conventional watch than most GPS devices manage, which makes it genuinely comfortable through a full day and night of wear — the continuous health monitoring only makes sense if the watch stays on. The sage grey silicone strap uses an 18mm quick-release fitting, so swapping it out requires no tools and takes seconds.

Gary Burrell and Min Kao founded Garmin in 1989 — the name is a contraction of their first names — to build GPS receivers for aviation and marine use. Consumer navigation came later, and wearables later still.
