Stepping up in Girard-Perregaux's range
The Laureato first appeared in 1975, arriving alongside the Nautilus and the Royal Oak as the industry's integrated-bracelet sports watches redrew what steel could mean on a wrist. Where Girard-Perregaux's contribution distinguished itself was the octagonal bezel — polished, architectural, set against the circular case beneath it — and a dial finished not in brushed metal but in Clous de Paris hobnail, a technique borrowed from jewellery. That combination has kept the design coherent through revivals and updates without requiring explanation. At 42mm with an 11.1mm profile, this sits appreciably slimmer than its water resistance rating might suggest, and the integrated bracelet — mixing satin and polished surfaces in a way that echoes the dial's own texture play — pulls the case flush to the wrist rather than perching above it. The blue dial shifts between navy and something closer to slate under changing light, the hobnail pattern breaking up the surface so it reads as tactile even at a distance. The GP01800 is made in-house at a minimum 54-hour reserve, decorated with Côtes de Genève stripes on the bridges and a rhodium-plated rotor, all visible through the exhibition back. It is finishing carried through where most owners will not regularly look, which is generally a reliable indicator of where a movement stands.

Frequently asked questions, and things you should know about this watch
Can I swim with it?
Yes. At 100m it is rated for swimming and snorkelling, though not for diving.
Will the glass scratch?
Unlikely. Sapphire is second only to diamond in hardness and shrugs off everyday marking.
Does it need a battery?
No. It is automatic — the motion of your wrist winds it, and there is no cell to replace.
How long does it run for when it's not worn?
About 54 hours fully wound — enough to survive a night off the wrist, but not a full weekend.
Will it fit my wrist?
Lug-to-lug is 49mm, which suits wrists from roughly 16.5cm (6½ inches) upward.
Lug-to-lug decides fit more than case diameter does.
Is it a men's or women's watch?
Listed as men's.
Cheapest place to buy
Goldsmiths is the only UK retailer we track stocking this reference, so there is nothing to compare it against today.
Who are Goldsmiths?
Goldsmiths has been selling watches in Britain since 1778 and is part of the Watches of Switzerland Group, which is listed on the London Stock Exchange. They are an authorised dealer, so a watch comes with the manufacturer’s own warranty.
