The Frogman name reaches back to the canvas-strapped "Canteen" watches Hamilton supplied to U.S. Navy underwater demolition teams during the Second World War — the units that became the SEALs. A commercial version followed in 1951, and the current generation, revised in 2022, reworked the crown guard into a more symmetrical shape that both protects the crown and sits more cleanly against the case. The H-10 movement inside is where Hamilton has done its most considered work. An 80-hour power reserve is generous enough to carry a weekend off the wrist, the Nivachron balance spring resists magnetic fields without needing a soft-iron cage, and the movement beats at 21,600vph — steady rather than hurried. The orange-tipped seconds hand reads well against the black dial at a glance, and the SuperLuminova is applied with enough generosity that the watch is genuinely useful in the dark. At 46mm the case is large and makes no apology for it. The angular lugs and flat brushed planes keep it looking purposeful rather than bloated, and the accordion-profile green rubber strap does enough to follow the wrist that the size is less confrontational than the measurements suggest. The crown guard takes a little adjusting to — reaching past it is not quite instinctive — but it causes no discomfort in wear, which is precisely what a redesigned guard ought to achieve.
