Mappin & Webb Watches of Switzerland Campaign Mens Watch
Ref. 01 030 1050 4156
The Campaign draws on Mappin & Webb's own archive of watches made for British soldiers in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries — the coin-edge case profile, the onion crown, the sword hands and the red twelve are all lifted from that material rather than invented for effect. The red twelve in particular comes directly from military-issue pieces where it served as an unambiguous orientation point under pressure. Seven percent of net sales from this collection goes to Style for Soldiers, a charity supporting severely injured servicemen, which gives the heritage reference rather more weight than most military-inspired designs can claim. On the wrist the dial is deliberately legible: bold Arabic numerals, a small seconds at six o'clock, nothing else competing for attention. The onion crown sits proud enough to grip easily with cold or gloved hands — a detail that reads as ornamental at a glance but was entirely functional in origin.
