The Sfida collection takes its name from the Italian for challenge, and the brief was plainly to produce something that reads as a sports watch without hiding the mechanism inside it. The openworked blue dial is the whole point of that exercise — the Miyota 8N24 sits exposed behind it, visible from the front and through the exhibition caseback, so the movement becomes the decoration rather than something the case conceals. At 44mm and 170 grams on a solid steel bracelet, this is a watch that announces itself. The skeleton layout suits the scale: there is enough visual depth in the dial to justify the size rather than simply fill it. The unidirectional bezel adds a layer of instrument credibility, and the hardened mineral crystal with its sapphire coating keeps the view into the movement cleaner than plain mineral alone would manage. On the wrist, the weight is noticeable — this is not a watch that disappears under a shirt. The 8N24 is an honest workhorse. It is not Miyota's finest calibre, but it is a genuine Japanese automatic with 21 jewels and a 42-hour power reserve, and it is robust enough that wearing the movement as the centrepiece of the dial involves no real risk.

Learn more about Maserati

The Maserati brothers founded their workshop in Bologna in 1914 and built racing cars that won the Targa Florio and the Indianapolis 500. The trident emblem comes from the Fountain of Neptune in Bologna.

The watches are a licensed line produced by Morellato Group in Italy, not by the carmaker. They draw openly on automotive design: tachymeter bezels, perforated leather straps recalling racing gloves, dashboard-style dials, and case shapes referencing grilles and instrument binnacles.

Movements are quartz and bought-in automatic. The appeal is the association and the styling rather than the mechanics.

Frequently asked questions, and things you should know about this watch

Can I swim with it?

Yes. At 100m it is rated for swimming and snorkelling, though not for diving.

Will the glass scratch?

Unlikely. Sapphire is second only to diamond in hardness and shrugs off everyday marking.

Does it need a battery?

No. It is automatic — the motion of your wrist winds it, and there is no cell to replace.

How long does it run for when it's not worn?

About 42 hours fully wound — enough to survive a night off the wrist, but not a full weekend.

What size strap does it take?

22mm. Any strap of that width will fit, and on most modern watches quick-release bars make the swap a two-minute job with no tools.

Is it a men's or women's watch?

Listed as men's.
