Stepping up in the same colour and case shape
The Super Antarctic name belongs to the 1950s, when Nivada Grenchen was outfitting expeditions to some of the less hospitable parts of the planet. This 3.6.9 reissue takes its specific form from a vintage piece that surfaced on the brand's Instagram — enough followers responded that Nivada treated it as a brief, and the result is a deliberate reconstruction of that original rather than a loose interpretation of it. At 38mm with a 45mm lug span, it sits where a watch of this character should: present on the wrist without demanding notice. The matte black dial uses a sparse 3-6-9 Arabic layout with batons filling the other positions, and the Super-LumiNova is applied with a deliberately aged, creamy tone to keep it honest to the source. Lollipop hands reinforce that vintage reading without tipping into costume. The perforated leather strap continues the period logic — it is a racing detail that looks right here because the original wore something similar. The screw-down caseback carries a gold medallion, and the same gold appears on the movement rotor inside — details that reward turning the watch over, though the caseback stays closed. At 12mm thick it is not especially slim, but the proportions are coherent, and the Soprod P024 — functionally an ETA 2824-2 — is a movement that will be serviced without difficulty anywhere in the world.

Frequently asked questions, and things you should know about this watch
Can I swim with it?
Yes. At 100m it is rated for swimming and snorkelling, though not for diving.
Will the glass scratch?
Unlikely. Sapphire is second only to diamond in hardness and shrugs off everyday marking.
Does it need a battery?
No. It is automatic — the motion of your wrist winds it, and there is no cell to replace.
How long does it run for when it's not worn?
About 38 hours fully wound — so it will usually stop if you leave it off overnight.
What size strap does it take?
20mm. Any strap of that width will fit, and on most modern watches quick-release bars make the swap a two-minute job with no tools.
Will it fit my wrist?
Lug-to-lug is 45mm, which suits wrists from roughly 16cm (6¼ inches) upward.
Lug-to-lug decides fit more than case diameter does.
Is it a men's or women's watch?
Listed as men's, though at 38mm it sits in the range that suits anyone.
Cheapest place to buy
Goldsmiths is the only UK retailer we track stocking this reference, so there is nothing to compare it against today.
Who are Goldsmiths?
Goldsmiths has been selling watches in Britain since 1778 and is part of the Watches of Switzerland Group, which is listed on the London Stock Exchange. They are an authorised dealer, so a watch comes with the manufacturer’s own warranty.
