Stepping up in Nomos Glashütte's range
The Metro collection arrived in 2014 carrying something significant beneath it: the debut of Nomos's own escapement, the Swing System, developed entirely in Glashütte after years of reliance on bought-in lever-and-balance assemblies. That the DUW 4401 powering this watch contains a proprietary escapement — alongside Glashütte ribbing and perlage visible through the exhibition caseback — matters because it means Nomos now controls every meaningful part of what makes the movement run. Mark Braun's case design is the other argument. At 7.7mm thick with wire-style lugs that angle down to follow the wrist, the Metro sits almost flush against the arm in a way that 37mm rounds rarely manage, and the lug-to-lug of 43.6mm keeps it there without pinching. The dial refuses to be quiet about it: black oxidised hands, mint green hour dots, a red small seconds hand and a circular power reserve arc make a graphic case for themselves in a way that silver dials with matching indices do not. The Shell Cordovan strap repays attention over time — it is a hide that smooths rather than creases with wear, and the quick-change spring bars mean swapping it takes seconds rather than a trip to a watchmaker.

Roland Schwertner, a photographer and computer technician from Düsseldorf with no watchmaking background, registered Nomos in Glashütte in January 1990 — two months after the Berlin Wall fell and before German reunification was complete. The town's watchmaking infrastructure had been state-owned for four decades and was suddenly available.
The design language was settled from the start and has barely moved: Bauhaus in the strict sense, drawing on the Dessau school's functionalism. Sans-serif numerals, no applied ornament, no unnecessary line, and dial layouts where every element earns its place. The Tangente, one of the first models, remains the flagship and looks the same today.
The technical ambition came later and was considerable for a company of its size. Nomos moved from modified Swiss ébauches to its own Alpha calibre, then to the DUW family, and in 2014 introduced the swing system — a proprietary escapement with an in-house hairspring, the component almost no independent manufacturer makes. Fewer than a dozen companies worldwide produce their own hairsprings.
The house is still independent, still based in a converted railway station in Glashütte, with design offices in Berlin. It occupies unusual territory: in-house movements and German finishing at prices closer to Swiss mid-range brands using bought-in calibres, which has made it the most common entry point into serious German watchmaking.
