Stepping up in Omega's range
The Dark Side of the Moon line arrived at Baselworld 2013 as Omega's answer to a specific challenge: how to build a Speedmaster entirely from ceramic without compromise. The Pitch Black variant takes that further still — every visible surface, including the deployant clasp, is the same brushed and polished black ceramic, and the tachymeter scale and sub-dial markings are filled with green Super-LumiNova rather than the white used elsewhere in the collection, giving this reference a character that reads as distinctly its own. At 44.25mm it sounds substantial, but a lug-to-lug of 49.80mm means it sits closer to the wrist than that diameter implies, and the ceramic construction keeps the whole thing to 99 grams — light enough that the size stops feeling like a commitment after the first day. The matte black dial absorbs light flatly, which makes the green lume applications the only thing that catches the eye in low light, and in daylight the contrast between brushed and polished ceramic surfaces does the work that colour would do on an ordinary case. The Calibre 9300 underneath is Omega's own column-wheel chronograph with a Co-Axial escapement, a silicon balance spring, and a 60-hour power reserve from twin barrels — a movement specification that few in-house automatic chronographs at any size can match. The black leather strap with ecru stitching is the one element that breaks the monochrome logic, and it does so just enough to remind you the watch is worn rather than displayed.

Louis Brandt began assembling pocket watches in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1848. His sons moved production to Biel in 1880 and, in 1894, released a calibre whose parts were fully interchangeable and which could be serviced by any watchmaker with standard tools. They named it Omega. The movement was successful enough that the company took its name.
Omega's history is bound up with measurement in public. It became official timekeeper of the Olympic Games in 1932 and has held the role for most Games since, which drove genuine engineering: photo-finish cameras, touchpads in swimming pools, and the timing systems that made hundredths of a second meaningful.
NASA qualified the Speedmaster for manned spaceflight in 1965 after testing chronographs from several manufacturers to destruction, and it was on Buzz Aldrin's wrist on the lunar surface in 1969. The watch has never been substantially redesigned.
The Seamaster line dates to 1948 and covers everything from dress watches to saturation diving instruments. Omega's technical position strengthened considerably after 1999 with the adoption of George Daniels' co-axial escapement, the first genuinely new escapement to reach series production in two centuries, and more recently through Master Chronometer certification testing resistance to magnetic fields at 15,000 gauss.
