The Mako name has belonged to Orient's dive-tool line since the mid-2000s, and this solar chronograph is one of the more ambitious things the family has produced — a proper 200m-rated diver that also tracks elapsed time, a second time zone and small seconds from a single solar movement built in Japan. The VS752 is not a borrowed ébauche but an Orient calibre, accurate to within 20 seconds a month and capable of running for around six months on a full charge, which in practice means it lives permanently topped up on any wrist that sees daylight. At 42.8mm the case reads large, but a lug-to-lug distance of 48.1mm keeps it closer to the wrist than the diameter suggests, and 13.1mm of thickness is restrained for a solar chronograph carrying this many functions. The matte black dial manages three subdials and a 24-hour display without feeling overcrowded, and the 120-click bezel gives the kind of positive engagement that rewards use rather than display. The bracelet is solid link rather than hollow, and 167 grams confirms it — the weight is present and deliberate, and the dual push-button clasp with its security latch means it stays where it is put.

Orient began in 1950 as Tama Keiki, successor to a Tokyo watch business Shogoro Yoshida had started in 1901. It became Orient Watch Company the following year and set out to do something few companies attempt: build complete mechanical movements in-house, at prices aimed at ordinary buyers.
That is still the point of the brand. Orient designs and manufactures its own calibres rather than buying Swiss ébauches, which is why an Orient automatic can cost less than a quartz watch from a fashion label while containing a movement the company made itself.
The Bambino made the case to a wider audience — a domed-crystal dress automatic at a price that embarrassed a lot of more expensive watches — and the Kamasu and Mako divers did the same for tool watches.
Orient Star sits above the main line, with higher finishing, power-reserve indicators and in-house calibres of greater complexity.
The company became a subsidiary of Seiko Epson in 2009 and remains one, which gives it manufacturing depth while leaving the identity distinct from Seiko's own.
