The Bambino line is where Orient makes its case for dress watchmaking, and this second-generation variant represents a meaningful step forward from the original. The calibre underneath is no longer the older 48743 but the F6724, an in-house movement that adds hand-winding and hacking — the ability to stop the seconds hand and set the time precisely — while the outward appearance remains identical to its predecessor. That continuity is deliberate: the point was to modernise without disturbing a design that already worked. What the design does is create a domed, slightly theatrical dial presence that reads as considerably larger than 40.5mm would suggest. The highly curved mineral crystal pools light across the cream surface and draws the blue hands into sharp relief at an angle; in a candlelit room this reads well beyond its station. The retro onion crown and printed Roman numerals keep the whole thing anchored in the mid-twentieth century, and the crocodile-embossed leather strap — glossy, brown, with tonal stitching — reinforces that without overselling it. Worth noting for anyone planning to wear this formally: the lume specification is academic, as the hands and dial carry no luminous material whatsoever. This is a watch designed entirely around daylight and artificial light, and it is dressed accordingly.

Orient began in 1950 as Tama Keiki, successor to a Tokyo watch business Shogoro Yoshida had started in 1901. It became Orient Watch Company the following year and set out to do something few companies attempt: build complete mechanical movements in-house, at prices aimed at ordinary buyers.
That is still the point of the brand. Orient designs and manufactures its own calibres rather than buying Swiss ébauches, which is why an Orient automatic can cost less than a quartz watch from a fashion label while containing a movement the company made itself.
The Bambino made the case to a wider audience — a domed-crystal dress automatic at a price that embarrassed a lot of more expensive watches — and the Kamasu and Mako divers did the same for tool watches.
Orient Star sits above the main line, with higher finishing, power-reserve indicators and in-house calibres of greater complexity.
The company became a subsidiary of Seiko Epson in 2009 and remains one, which gives it manufacturing depth while leaving the identity distinct from Seiko's own.
