Stepping up in Orient's range
The Bambino has always been Orient's argument that a dress watch does not require a Swiss address or a corresponding price. This generation of the line quietly corrected one of the few criticisms levelled at its predecessor: the 44mm lug-to-lug distance makes it sit flush against a wider range of wrists than the older 40.5mm-cased models, without the dial itself shrinking to the point of looking timid. The movement inside, the F6724, is Orient's own, built in Japan and descended from the 487-series calibres the brand spent decades refining. It hacks and hand-winds — practical niceties that matter when you are setting a dress watch to the second before an occasion. On the wrist, the combination of a convex cream dial and the box-domed crystal above it creates a depth that shifts noticeably in raking light; the dark blue hands read cleanly against the champagne surface in a way that silver would not. The 12.5mm case thickness is almost entirely down to that dome, which is worth knowing: this is not a flat watch, but the curve sits against the wrist rather than projecting upward. There is no luminous compound on the dial or hands — the blue hands are chosen for legibility, not for darkness. On a crocodile-embossed brown strap with a plain pin buckle, this is a watch that is adjusted the old way, which suits the overall sensibility exactly.

Orient began in 1950 as Tama Keiki, successor to a Tokyo watch business Shogoro Yoshida had started in 1901. It became Orient Watch Company the following year and set out to do something few companies attempt: build complete mechanical movements in-house, at prices aimed at ordinary buyers.
That is still the point of the brand. Orient designs and manufactures its own calibres rather than buying Swiss ébauches, which is why an Orient automatic can cost less than a quartz watch from a fashion label while containing a movement the company made itself.
The Bambino made the case to a wider audience — a domed-crystal dress automatic at a price that embarrassed a lot of more expensive watches — and the Kamasu and Mako divers did the same for tool watches.
Orient Star sits above the main line, with higher finishing, power-reserve indicators and in-house calibres of greater complexity.
The company became a subsidiary of Seiko Epson in 2009 and remains one, which gives it manufacturing depth while leaving the identity distinct from Seiko's own.
