The Twenty~4 began as a rectangular quartz watch at the turn of the century, designed to sit comfortably in the company of jewellery rather than announce itself as a precision instrument. The 7300 reference changed that premise entirely: a round case, a self-winding movement, and with it a shift from accessory to watch in the fullest sense. The calibre now fitted, the 26-330 S C, carries Gyromax balances and a Spiromax spring, is finished to Patek Philippe Seal standard, and winds through a 21-carat gold rotor visible through the exhibition caseback — details that belong to the serious end of the catalogue, in a case that still reads as something a woman might wear to dinner. The grey dial has a sunburst finish that deepens towards a near-black rim, giving it a quiet depth that changes under different light. White-gold Arabic numerals and baton hands carry the lume, and the date at six sits in a white-gold frame that keeps it from looking like an afterthought. The bezel carries two rows of 160 brilliant-cut diamonds, hand-set, which explains why this reference exists at the boundary between horology and jewellery — the movement earns the former, the stones deliver the latter. The bracelet is fully polished solid steel, fastening through a four-catch fold-over clasp that locks with enough conviction to justify the 30-metre rating, even if this watch is unlikely to see much of that.

Antoine Norbert de Patek, a Polish cavalry officer exiled after the November Uprising, founded a watch business in Geneva in 1839 with his countryman François Czapek. The partnership dissolved after six years, and in 1845 Patek took on the French watchmaker Adrien Philippe, inventor of the keyless winding crown. The firm became Patek Philippe in 1851.
That single invention mattered more than any other in the company's early history: it removed the winding key, and every modern watch descends from it. Queen Victoria bought a Patek pendant watch at the Great Exhibition the same year, establishing the royal patronage the house has traded on ever since.
The Stern family, dial manufacturers and long-standing suppliers, bought the company in 1932 during the Depression. Four generations later it remains in their hands — the last independent family-owned manufacture in Geneva, currently led by Thierry Stern.
Patek's reputation rests on complications: the Calibre 89 of 1989 carried thirty-three of them, and the Grandmaster Chime remains among the most complicated wristwatches made. The Nautilus, drawn by Gérald Genta in 1976 as a steel luxury sports watch, became an unlikely commercial phenomenon four decades after launch.
Production stays deliberately modest, in the tens of thousands annually, and every watch carries the Patek Philippe Seal, an in-house standard the company adopted in 2009 after abandoning the Geneva Seal as insufficiently strict.
