Stepping up in Philipp Plein's range

Price range £219 to £499 across 24 Philipp Plein watches in stock.

A cushion case, 42mm across and 13mm deep, in stainless steel with a fixed steel bezel. The silver-tone skeleton dial leaves the movement on show, and a transparent caseback does the same from behind: a Seiko NH70 automatic with a 40-hour reserve. Hands and markers are luminous, and the crystal is scratch-resistant mineral. A black silicone strap and pin buckle hold it at 115g, with water resistance to 50 metres.

Learn more about Philipp Plein

Philipp Plein founded his label in Munich in 1998, initially designing furniture before moving into fashion. The brand built itself on deliberate excess and has been divisive throughout.

The watches follow suit: heavy gold and black PVD plating, skull motifs, dense crystal setting, and large cases. Movements are quartz. There is no attempt at horological restraint and none is intended.

The brand knows precisely what it is doing and does it without apology, which at least makes it coherent.

Frequently asked questions, and things you should know about this watch

Can I swim with it?

Showering yes, swimming no. 50m covers splashes and brief immersion, but a swimming stroke generates well above the pressure that figure describes.

Water resistance explained

Will the glass scratch?

It can, over time. Mineral glass handles daily wear but will pick up fine scratches that sapphire would not.

Sapphire, mineral and acrylic compared

Does it need a battery?

No. It is automatic — the motion of your wrist winds it, and there is no cell to replace.

Quartz, automatic and solar compared

How long does it run for when it's not worn?

About 40 hours fully wound — enough to survive a night off the wrist, but not a full weekend.

Is it a men's or women's watch?

Listed as men's.

Has the price changed recently?

It's currently at its lowest recorded price since we began tracking it. It's ranged between £294 and £469, today it's £294.
