Raymond Weil's partnership with the music world runs deep, but this 2017 Maestro is the collaboration the brand had most reason to get right. Released as a tribute to Abbey Road and limited to 3,000 pieces, the black dial is engraved with microgrooves that replicate the surface of a vinyl LP — the kind of detail that repays close inspection. At four o'clock, silhouettes of all four Beatles cross their famous zebra crossing, and the band's logo sits at the centre of the dial in a way that feels considered rather than pasted on. At 9.2mm thick, the watch sits low enough on the wrist to pass under a cuff without complaint, which is unusual for a fully automatic movement with a date function. The RW4200 inside offers hand-winding and hacking seconds alongside its 38-hour reserve — practical specification for a watch that will be worn, not only displayed. The caseback rewards a look: smoked sapphire over the movement, with the Beatles logo repeated there too, and the five-link bracelet closes with a spring-release butterfly clasp that opens cleanly without hunting for a catch.

Raymond Weil founded his company in Geneva in 1976, which was close to the worst possible moment: Swiss mechanical watchmaking was being dismantled by quartz, and established houses were closing. Starting one from nothing took a particular kind of nerve.
The company survived and stayed independent, which is rarer than it sounds — most Swiss names of comparable size were absorbed into Swatch Group, Richemont or LVMH. Raymond Weil is still owned and run by the founding family, with his grandson Elie Bernheim as chief executive.
Music runs through the brand deliberately rather than decoratively. The collections are named for it — Maestro, Toccata, Tango, Freelancer — and the company has built long partnerships with orchestras, conservatoires and record labels.
The watches sit where Swiss watchmaking is still attainable: slim dress pieces, chronographs and skeletonised automatics, mostly on Sellita and ETA calibres, with the Millesime line taking a more vintage-minded direction in recent years.
