Stepping up in the same colour and case shape
Launched in 1988 as the first self-winding Daytona, the 16520 solved the problem that had defined the collection for two decades: Rolex had no automatic chronograph movement of its own. Their answer was to acquire the architecture of the Zenith El Primero — one of the finest ebauches ever made — and rebuild it almost from the ground up. More than half the components were replaced, the frequency was brought down from 36,000 to 28,800 vibrations per hour, and a Breguet overcoil hairspring was fitted in place of the Zenith original. What emerged, the Calibre 4030, is not a Zenith movement wearing Rolex clothes; it is a Rolex movement that began from an exceptional starting point, and collectors have spent thirty years arguing, affectionately, about which is the better for it. The case sits at 12.5mm — unusually restrained for a chronograph with a tachymeter bezel and three registers, and flat enough to disappear under a shirt cuff in a way that later, thicker sports chronographs will not. The small seconds register at nine o'clock is the quickest way to date it against the in-house generation that followed in 2000, where it moved to six; this dial layout belongs entirely to the Zenith era. On the wrist, examples from 1993 onward carry the polished-centre-link Oyster bracelet with the Oysterlock clasp, adjustable through spring bar holes inside the housing rather than a visible ratchet — a detail that rewards anyone who looks closely at how it fastens.

Hans Wilsdorf founded Wilsdorf & Davis in London in 1905 with his brother-in-law Alfred Davis, importing Swiss movements and casing them in England. He registered the name Rolex in 1908 — short, pronounceable in any language, and easy to fit on a dial.
Wilsdorf's conviction was that the wristwatch, then regarded as a woman's ornament and hopelessly fragile, could be made accurate and durable. He proved the first half in 1910 by obtaining the first chronometer certification for a wristwatch, and the second in 1926 with the Oyster case, sealed by a screw-down crown and caseback. Mercedes Gleitze swam the Channel wearing one in 1927, and Wilsdorf bought the front page of the Daily Mail to say so — arguably the first modern watch marketing campaign.
The Perpetual rotor followed in 1931, giving automatic winding in a form the whole industry eventually copied. The company relocated to Geneva during the First World War to escape British wartime duties.
The professional models arrived in a compressed burst in the 1950s: Submariner, Explorer, GMT-Master, Milgauss, and later the Daytona. Each was built for a specific job — diving, exploration, aviation, laboratory work, racing — and each became a design template.
Wilsdorf left his shares to a private foundation on his death, so Rolex answers to no shareholders. It remains the largest producer of certified chronometers in Switzerland by a wide margin.
