Stepping up in the same colour and case shape

Price range £76 to £259 across 57 Rotary watches in stock.

The Heritage Altera sits in a long Rotary tradition of dress-adjacent watches built for daily wear rather than the display cabinet — proportioned to go under a cuff, keep correct time without fuss, and look the part across a wide range of occasions. At 38mm and 9.5mm deep, the case is compact enough to slip genuinely beneath a shirt sleeve, and the white dial with its Arabic numerals reads cleanly in most light without demanding attention. The expanding bracelet is the distinctive choice here. It stretches over the hand and settles on the wrist without any adjustment, no link removal, no clasp to line up — which sounds minor until it becomes part of a daily routine. At 192 grams the watch has more presence on the wrist than its slim profile suggests, and the gold PVD finish runs consistently across both case and bracelet so neither reads as an afterthought.

Learn more about Rotary

Moise Dreyfuss started Rotary in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1895. Within a generation his sons Georges and Sylvain had opened a London office and begun exporting to Britain, which turned out to be the decision that defined the company: Britain became, and remains, Rotary's most important market.

The winged wheel logo arrived in 1925 and has barely changed since. It became familiar enough in British high streets that the brand is widely taken for British, despite the Swiss origin.

Rotary supplied watches to the British Army, and the wartime and post-war association gave it a foothold in a market where an affordable, dependable Swiss watch was exactly what most buyers wanted.

The family held the company for over a century, making it for a long time the oldest family-owned Swiss watchmaker still trading. Ownership passed to Hong Kong's Citychamp in 2014, and in February 2025 to the UK's Peers Hardy Group.

The modern range sits at the accessible end — quartz and automatic dress watches, divers and chronographs, with the Henley, Windsor and Legacy lines carrying the collection.

Frequently asked questions, and things you should know about this watch

Can I swim with it?

No. At 30m it will survive rain and handwashing, but not submersion of any kind.

Will the glass scratch?

Unlikely. Sapphire is second only to diamond in hardness and shrugs off everyday marking.

Does it need a battery?

Yes. It is quartz, so expect a battery change every two to three years at a jeweller.

What size strap does it take?

18mm. Any strap of that width will fit, and on most modern watches quick-release bars make the swap a two-minute job with no tools.

Is it a men's or women's watch?

Listed as men's, though at 38mm it sits in the range that suits anyone.
