The Melbye sits at the centre of what Skagen does best: a titanium case sandblasted to a soft, matte finish, kept to 7.5mm across, thin enough that the mesh bracelet reads as a continuous surface rather than a watch on a strap. At 40mm the proportions are measured, and the weight — titanium being what it is — disappears on the wrist in a way that steel at the same size simply does not. Skagen was founded in 1989 by Henrik and Charlotte Jorst, a Danish couple who had moved to New York and began importing watches designed in the Danish manner. The name is that of the town at the northern tip of Jutland where the North Sea and the Baltic meet, a place associated with a nineteenth-century painters' colony and with a particular quality of light.
The design follows Danish functionalism fairly strictly: thin cases, mesh bracelets, dials with as little on them as the function allows, and no ornament that is not doing something. The company was bought by the Fossil Group in 2012 and continues under the same design direction.
