Stepping up in Bremont's range
The ALT1-ZT line began life in 2007 as Bremont's answer to a specific brief: a pilot's watch that could carry GMT alongside a chronograph without the dial becoming unreadable. The /51 variant goes further, drawing on the aesthetic of the P-51 Limited Edition — a much-sought Bremont aviation piece — to give the warm-tinted lume and aged character of a vintage cockpit instrument to a thoroughly modern case. That case is built using Bremont's Trip-Tick construction, a three-piece arrangement in which the middle barrel is DLC-treated to resist scratching at a level ordinary steel cannot approach. At 43mm across and 16mm deep it wears with real mass — 138 grams on the wrist is a substantive presence, and anyone expecting the lightness of a dress watch will notice the difference. The GMT bezel operates from a crown at eight o'clock rather than the usual three, which keeps the right side of the case clean and moves the 24-hour scale inside the dial rather than around the edge, which is what gives the ZT its legibility advantage over the original ALT1-Z. The Roto-Click mechanism runs on four ball bearings and indexes at every minute, which is precise enough to matter when you are actually tracking a second time zone. The BE-54AE is a COSC-certified modification of the ETA 7754, adjusted by Bremont and carrying a chronometer rating — meaning the accuracy has been independently verified rather than claimed. The bespoke Super-LumiNova on hands and indices is applied in multiple layers and carries a warm tint that reinforces the vintage reading of the watch, a detail that becomes more apparent in low light than under a showroom lamp.

Nick and Giles English founded Bremont in 2002, four years after their father died in a plane crash that Nick survived. All three had restored and flown vintage aircraft together, and the brand that emerged is inseparable from that. The name comes from Antoine Bremont, a French farmer who sheltered the brothers after an emergency landing.
Bremont set out to rebuild British watchmaking, which had effectively ended in the twentieth century. The early watches used Swiss movements in British-designed cases, with the Trip-Tick three-part case construction and a hardened outer barrel treated to over 2000 Vickers.
The military and aviation work is real rather than thematic. Bremont holds contracts with squadrons across the RAF, the US Air Force, and other services, producing issued watches for specific units, and has made watches for Martin-Baker ejection seat survivors — tested to the ejection forces themselves.
The company has also built watches incorporating material from historical objects: oak and copper from HMS Victory, aluminium from the Wright Flyer, and steel from Bletchley Park.
The manufacturing ambition advanced with the opening of a facility in Henley and the release of the ENG300 series in 2021, the first Bremont movement designed and largely made in England. Production is in the low tens of thousands annually.
