Stepping up in Bvlgari's range

Price range £2,980 to £26,200 across 26 Bvlgari watches in stock.

The Octo Roma began as Bvlgari's answer to a design problem: how to make an octagonal case feel neither aggressive nor archaic. The solution was a geometry that reads as round from a distance and reveals its eight sides only when you look closely — Roman architecture distilled into a wrist profile that sits comfortably without announcing itself. This version pairs a polished stainless steel case with an 18ct rose gold bezel, and the combination does something more considered than simple two-tone dressing. The blue dial is finished in Clous de Paris hobnail — the same motif that Haute Horlogerie reserves for its dressiest dials — and the rose gold hands and indices sit above it with enough warmth to pull the colour toward violet in certain light. The BVL191 runs at 4Hz with a 42-hour reserve, and the screw-down crown is rose gold capped with a black ceramic insert, a small detail that keeps the metalwork from reading as uniform. The transparent caseback lets the movement be seen. Bvlgari ships it with an interchangeable blue rubber strap alongside the steel bracelet, which means the watch can shift register without any tools.

Learn more about Bvlgari

Sotirio Bulgari was a silversmith from a village in Epirus who arrived in Rome and opened a shop on Via Sistina in 1884, later moving to the Via Condotti address the company still occupies. The Latinised V in the logo is a deliberate reference to classical Rome, and the house has drawn on Roman architecture and coinage ever since.

Two designs define it. The Serpenti, a coiled snake bracelet watch that first appeared in the 1940s, is the piece most associated with the name. The Bvlgari Bvlgari of 1975, with the brand name doubled around the bezel in the manner of a Roman coin inscription, began as a limited run for clients and became a permanent line.

Watchmaking became serious in 2000, when Bvlgari bought Gérald Genta and Daniel Roth and with them a genuine complications capability. Since 2014 the Octo Finissimo has set a series of world records for thinness across different complications — tourbillon, minute repeater, automatic, chronograph — which is not the sort of thing a jeweller was expected to be doing.

Unlikely. Sapphire is second only to diamond in hardness and shrugs off everyday marking.
