Stepping up in Ulysse Nardin's range
The Marine Torpilleur line traces its name to the torpedo boats that once put Ulysse Nardin's marine chronometers to the test — instruments built to be trusted in conditions that admitted no margin for error. This limited edition of 300 pieces carries that provenance into a bicompax chronograph that also advances the calendar automatically through months of 30 and 31 days, needing only a single correction each March. Both complications are handled through the crown alone, and the annual calendar can be wound forward or back — a practical detail that is rarer than it ought to be. The white varnished dial reads with the unhurried clarity of a nautical instrument: Roman numerals, blued pear-shaped hands, the twin subdials of the bicompax layout sitting in clean symmetry. At 44mm it wears with presence without feeling overbuilt; the 13.66mm profile is on the slimmer side for a movement carrying this much — UN-153 runs a silicon escapement across 406 parts and 53 jewels, and the 53-hour reserve means a long weekend off the wrist causes no disruption on Monday. The brown alligator strap with its oversized white stitching is a considered choice against that dial — the contrast is deliberate and the deployant buckle means the fit stays consistent once dialled in.
