Stepping up in Doxa's range
The Sub 200 line was Doxa's answer, in 2019, to the question of what a skin-diver's watch looks like when you strip it back to essentials — no complications beyond a date, no case bulk beyond what 200 metres demands, no aesthetic pretension beyond the orange, blue and black dials that made the original Sub famous in the 1960s. The Caribbean sits in that tradition as the blue variant: a colour that reads clearly against the dial rather than fighting it. What immediately confounds expectation is how the 42mm case actually sits. The 46mm lug-to-lug measurement is short enough that the watch hugs the wrist rather than bridging it, and 13.8mm of thickness is modest for a diver at this rating. The domed sapphire is the detail that repays handling — it replicates the distorting curve of vintage plexiglass while turning away scratches that would ruin the real thing, and in raking light it gives the dial a depth that flat crystals do not. The sapphire bezel insert carries the same logic: the unidirectional dive scale is readable and protected, and the fish-engraved buckle on the FKM rubber strap is the kind of small proprietary touch that distinguishes a house with a history from one without.

Doxa was founded by Georges Ducommun in Le Locle in 1889, and spent its early decades on pocket watches and, notably, dashboard clocks for the emerging car industry — supplying Bugatti among others.
Its lasting contribution came much later. In 1967 Doxa released the SUB 300, developed in consultation with professional divers, and it introduced several things now taken for granted. The dial was orange, chosen after testing which colour remained visible longest as depth filtered out light. The bezel carried a US Navy no-decompression scale rather than simple minute markers, letting a diver read safe bottom time directly. The beads-of-rice bracelet included an expansion section to fit over a wetsuit.
Jacques Cousteau's organisation distributed the watches, and US Divers sold them in America. The SUB became genuine professional equipment rather than a dive-styled dress watch, and it appears throughout Clive Cussler's novels on the wrist of Dirk Pitt.
Doxa struggled through the quartz era and was largely dormant before being revived by the Jenny family, who reissued the SUB faithfully from 2002 onward.
The modern range remains almost entirely dive watches, with the same cushion case, the same bezel scale, and dial colours named for their depth-rating heritage — Professional orange, Sharkhunter black, Searambler silver, Caribbean blue.
