The vívosmart 5 is the direct successor to the vívosmart 4, and the most significant change is one you notice immediately: the OLED touchscreen is 66% larger than its predecessor's, with a physical button added below the display to make navigation more reliable than touch alone. The result is a tracker that is genuinely easier to read and operate without feeling bulkier on the wrist. At 24.5 grams the device is light enough to disappear during sleep tracking, which matters given that continuous monitoring — heart rate, blood oxygen, respiration, stress — runs around the clock rather than on demand. There is no standalone GPS, but it will borrow a connected phone's signal to log pace and distance outdoors. The silicone band and its plastic pin buckle need no tools to fit and will survive everything the 50-metre rating implies.

Gary Burrell and Min Kao founded Garmin in 1989 — the name is a contraction of their first names — to build GPS receivers for aviation and marine use. Consumer navigation came later, and wearables later still.
Unlike most names in this directory that arrived from outside watchmaking, Garmin is not a licence. It designs and builds its own devices, writes its own software and runs its own satellite-positioning stack, which is why its watches do things Swiss houses do not attempt.
The fenix line established the template in 2012: a rugged multi-sport GPS watch with mapping, altimeter and week-long battery life. Forerunner covers running, Instinct the hard-wearing end, Venu the smartwatch end, and the MARQ line puts the same electronics in titanium and sapphire at Swiss prices.
