The vívoactive 5 consolidates what its predecessor offered across two case sizes into a single 42mm footprint, and switches the display to AMOLED in doing so — a meaningful step up in screen clarity for a line that has always leaned toward all-day wear rather than dedicated sport. At 36 grams and 11.1mm thick, it barely registers on the wrist, which matters when the expectation is that you wear it through workouts, through the working day and through the night for sleep tracking. The ivory colourway is carried through both the silicone strap and the anodised aluminium bezel ring, so the watch reads as a considered whole rather than a dark slab on a pale band. The AMOLED panel handles low-light legibility entirely through its own backlight — there is no phosphorescent lume here, nor any need for one on a screen this bright.

Gary Burrell and Min Kao founded Garmin in 1989 — the name is a contraction of their first names — to build GPS receivers for aviation and marine use. Consumer navigation came later, and wearables later still.
Unlike most names in this directory that arrived from outside watchmaking, Garmin is not a licence. It designs and builds its own devices, writes its own software and runs its own satellite-positioning stack, which is why its watches do things Swiss houses do not attempt.
