The vívoactive 5 is the direct successor to Garmin's vívoactive 4, and the most significant change is the display: where the earlier generation used an older screen technology, this one runs an AMOLED panel that makes the always-on health data genuinely readable in bright outdoor light. The shift matters because the watch is built around continuous monitoring — body battery, heart rate, stress, sleep coaching, VO2 max — and that data is only useful if you can actually see it mid-run or mid-morning without cupping your hand over the face. At 36 grams on the wrist it disappears, and the slim 11.1mm profile means it does not catch on a jacket sleeve the way most GPS watches do. Gary Burrell and Min Kao founded Garmin in 1989 — the name is a contraction of their first names — to build GPS receivers for aviation and marine use. Consumer navigation came later, and wearables later still.
