The Khaki X-Wind exists to solve a specific navigational problem: crosswind drift. During flight, a side-wind pushes an aircraft off its heading, and calculating how much requires translating airspeed, wind speed and wind angle into a correction. Hamilton built that calculation into the watch itself. The outer rotating bezel and the two screw-down crowns on the right side of the case each control a separate internal rotating bezel; together, the three layers form a mechanical drift-angle calculator that works without electronics or paper. The main crown and chronograph pushers sit on the left — a destro layout that keeps the right side free for those two dedicated bezel controls, and incidentally positions the pushers more naturally for left-handed operation. At 44mm across and 54mm lug to lug, this is a deliberate presence on the wrist, and at 141 grams the weight confirms it. The lug geometry angles downward enough that it hugs a medium or larger wrist better than the numbers suggest it will, but it will not disappear under a cuff. The H-21 inside draws its architecture from the Valjoux 7750, one of the most thoroughly understood chronograph movements in the trade, and Hamilton has stretched its power reserve to 60 hours — a meaningful improvement for a pilot who leaves the watch in a flight bag overnight. The brown calfskin strap carries white contrast stitching and metal rivets at the lugs, details that read as functional rather than decorative, and the pin buckle is shaped into a stylised H.

Learn more about Hamilton

Hamilton was founded in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1892, and its early business was the railroad. American rail accidents caused by unsynchronised timekeeping had forced the industry to adopt strict standards, and Hamilton built pocket watches accurate enough to meet them — earning the description the watch of railroad accuracy.

Two things then defined it. The first was war: Hamilton supplied over a million watches to American forces in the Second World War, suspending civilian production entirely, and its marine chronometers were fitted across the US Navy.

The second was electricity. The Ventura of 1957 was the first battery-powered electric wristwatch, and its asymmetric shield-shaped case, designed by Richard Arbib, looked like nothing before it. Elvis Presley wore one in Blue Hawaii.

Hamilton's cinematic presence is unusually deep — over five hundred films — and includes the watches designed for 2001: A Space Odyssey with Stanley Kubrick, and appearances in Interstellar and Tenet.

American manufacturing ended in 1969 as the quartz crisis approached. The brand was acquired by the Swiss and is now part of the Swatch Group, based in Biel, where it occupies a distinctive position: American design heritage, Swiss production, and ETA movements with long power reserves at accessible prices. The Khaki Field, descended from the wartime issue watches, is its best-known line.

Frequently asked questions, and things you should know about this watch

Can I swim with it?

Yes. At 100m it is rated for swimming and snorkelling, though not for diving.

Will the glass scratch?

Unlikely. Sapphire is second only to diamond in hardness and shrugs off everyday marking.

Does it need a battery?

No. Wrist motion generates the charge, stored in a capacitor rather than a disposable cell.

What size strap does it take?

22mm. Any strap of that width will fit, and on most modern watches quick-release bars make the swap a two-minute job with no tools.

Will it fit my wrist?

Lug-to-lug is 54mm, which suits wrists from roughly 18.5cm (7¼ inches) upward.

Lug-to-lug decides fit more than case diameter does.

Is it a men's or women's watch?

Listed as men's.
