Stepping up in the same colour and case shape
The original Depthmaster came out of the 1960s, when Nivada Grenchen was producing serious tool watches for professional divers rather than chasing the dress-watch market. This re-edition preserves the detail that made the original memorable: the Art Deco Arabic numerals, where the 6 and the 9 are drawn in a style so rounded and open that they have been read as Pac-Man ever since the comparison was first made. It is an odd thing to say about a saturation diving instrument, but the dial is genuinely charming, and the cushion case — soft-cornered, slightly baroque — suits it. At 39mm with a 47mm lug-to-lug, this wears closer to a medium-sized sport watch than anything overbuilt, which makes the 1,000-metre rating feel almost absurd. The unidirectional bezel runs 120 clicks for fine elapsed-time resolution, and the automatic helium escape valve means the watch is genuinely equipped for saturation diving work rather than merely rated to a depth that implies it. On leather rather than a rubber or steel option, it reads less like a working instrument and more like a collector's piece — which is probably the honest reason most buyers will choose it.

Frequently asked questions, and things you should know about this watch
Can I swim with it?
Yes. At 1000m it is rated for swimming, snorkelling and recreational diving.
Will the glass scratch?
Unlikely. Sapphire is second only to diamond in hardness and shrugs off everyday marking.
Does it need a battery?
No. It is automatic — the motion of your wrist winds it, and there is no cell to replace.
How long does it run for when it's not worn?
About 38 hours fully wound — so it will usually stop if you leave it off overnight.
What size strap does it take?
20mm. Any strap of that width will fit, and on most modern watches quick-release bars make the swap a two-minute job with no tools.
Will it fit my wrist?
Lug-to-lug is 47mm, which suits wrists from roughly 16cm (6¼ inches) upward.
Lug-to-lug decides fit more than case diameter does.
Is it a men's or women's watch?
Listed as men's, though at 39mm it sits in the range that suits anyone.
Cheapest place to buy
Goldsmiths is the only UK retailer we track stocking this reference, so there is nothing to compare it against today.
Who are Goldsmiths?
Goldsmiths has been selling watches in Britain since 1778 and is part of the Watches of Switzerland Group, which is listed on the London Stock Exchange. They are an authorised dealer, so a watch comes with the manufacturer’s own warranty.
