The chronograph complication joined the collection in 2018, and this 40mm reference is a deliberate step back from the 43mm version it replaced — narrower across the dial and a meaningful 1.5mm flatter at 15.4mm, which is still substantial for a 40mm case but considerably less so than the outgoing model. The Oris 771 inside is the Sellita SW510 in Oris livery, with a red rotor, hacking seconds and 62 hours of power reserve from a full wind. The layout is clean and purposeful: running seconds at 9 o'clock, a 30-minute counter at 3, no date to break the symmetry. That arrangement works particularly well on the black dial, where the two sub-registers sit a little closer to the periphery than they did in the wider case — a visible consequence of fitting the same movement into less space, though not a damaging one. The domed sapphire adds a period quality that the flat alternative would not. The strap is Cervo Volante deer leather with contrast stitching near the lugs — the 20mm width opening up far more third-party options than the 21mm lug on its predecessor. The solid screwed caseback carries special engravings. A bracelet version exists at a premium; this leather reference sits at the more accessible end of the pair.

Paul Cattin and Georges Christian took over an empty factory in Hölstein in 1904 and named the company after a nearby gorge. It stayed independent, and stayed in that valley, for its entire history.
Oris built its reputation on volume mechanical watches made properly. By the 1960s it was among the largest Swiss employers in the sector, producing hundreds of thousands of movements a year. Its most curious historical footnote is regulatory: Swiss law restricted the number of jewels a watch could contain under certain classifications, and Oris fought a decade-long legal battle to be permitted to fit lever escapements — winning in 1968.
The quartz crisis nearly ended it. The company was bought out of the ASUAG conglomerate in 1982 by two managers, Rolf Portmann and Ulrich Herzog, who took it back to mechanical watches exclusively at precisely the moment the rest of the industry was abandoning them.
That independence remains the point. Oris is one of the few Swiss houses of any scale with no group ownership, and it competes on value rather than prestige — dive watches, pilot's watches, and the Big Crown line descended from its 1938 pointer calendar. The house developed its own Calibre 400 family from 2020, offering five-day power reserves and ten-year service intervals at prices well below the norm for in-house movements.
