Patek Philippe Annual Calender Chronograph 40.5mm Rose Gold

The 5960 series marked a genuine first: an automatic chronograph paired with an annual calendar in the same case, and Patek chose to solve the dial layout problem in a way no one had tried before. Rather than arrange sub-dials in the conventional manner, the calendar information — day, date, month — runs in three apertures across the upper dial in a clean arc, while the chronograph's minute and hour registers share a single counter at six o'clock, a solution Patek calls a monocounter. The result is a dial that carries more information than almost anything at this size without reading as crowded. The movement driving it, the CH 28-520 IRM QA 24H, was Patek's first in-house automatic chronograph calibre and incorporates a vertical clutch that allows the central seconds hand to run continuously as a standard seconds display without degrading the mechanism — a detail that distinguishes it from many column-wheel chronographs of the period. Early examples left the manufacture with the Geneva Seal; from mid-2009, pieces carry the Patek Philippe Seal instead, which imposes stricter finishing and performance standards. At 55 hours the power reserve is generous enough that weekend removal is not a concern, and the indicator on the dial keeps the owner informed without arithmetic. The lugs curve downward closely enough that the 49.3mm lug-to-lug measurement wears shorter than the number suggests, and the Calatrava cross deployant in 18ct rose gold keeps the underside of the wrist flat and unobtrusive beneath a cuff.

Antoine Norbert de Patek, a Polish cavalry officer exiled after the November Uprising, founded a watch business in Geneva in 1839 with his countryman François Czapek. The partnership dissolved after six years, and in 1845 Patek took on the French watchmaker Adrien Philippe, inventor of the keyless winding crown. The firm became Patek Philippe in 1851.
That single invention mattered more than any other in the company's early history: it removed the winding key, and every modern watch descends from it. Queen Victoria bought a Patek pendant watch at the Great Exhibition the same year, establishing the royal patronage the house has traded on ever since.
The Stern family, dial manufacturers and long-standing suppliers, bought the company in 1932 during the Depression. Four generations later it remains in their hands — the last independent family-owned manufacture in Geneva, currently led by Thierry Stern.
Patek's reputation rests on complications: the Calibre 89 of 1989 carried thirty-three of them, and the Grandmaster Chime remains among the most complicated wristwatches made. The Nautilus, drawn by Gérald Genta in 1976 as a steel luxury sports watch, became an unlikely commercial phenomenon four decades after launch.
Production stays deliberately modest, in the tens of thousands annually, and every watch carries the Patek Philippe Seal, an in-house standard the company adopted in 2009 after abandoning the Geneva Seal as insufficiently strict.
