Raymond Weil's musical collaborations are among the more earnest in watchmaking — partnerships rooted in the founder's love of music rather than marketing convenience. This piece, limited to 1,500 examples, was made with the House of Marley to mark Bob Marley's legacy, and the dial wears it openly: a lion head drawn from the Ethiopian flag sits at the centre, the minute track runs in yellow, the seconds hand in red, and the GMT hand — arrow-shaped — in green. The red, gold and green are not decoration applied after the fact; they are the composition. At 11mm thick, this sits unusually flat for a watch rated to 300 metres, and will pass under a cuff where most dive-rated cases will not. The bidirectional bezel carries a 24-hour scale on its anodised insert, pairing with the GMT hand for a second time zone without arithmetic. The caseback is where the edition declares itself most quietly: Marley's signature is engraved alongside the phrase "TIME WILL TELL" — taken from the Kaya album — making the close of a watch that, on the dial side, speaks in colour rather than text.

Raymond Weil founded his company in Geneva in 1976, which was close to the worst possible moment: Swiss mechanical watchmaking was being dismantled by quartz, and established houses were closing. Starting one from nothing took a particular kind of nerve.

The company survived and stayed independent, which is rarer than it sounds — most Swiss names of comparable size were absorbed into Swatch Group, Richemont or LVMH. Raymond Weil is still owned and run by the founding family, with his grandson Elie Bernheim as chief executive.

Music runs through the brand deliberately rather than decoratively. The collections are named for it — Maestro, Toccata, Tango, Freelancer — and the company has built long partnerships with orchestras, conservatoires and record labels.

The watches sit where Swiss watchmaking is still attainable: slim dress pieces, chronographs and skeletonised automatics, mostly on Sellita and ETA calibres, with the Millesime line taking a more vintage-minded direction in recent years.
