Speake-Marin Ripples Kármán Line 40.5mm Mens Watch Blue
Ref. 604020010
Sits in Speake-Marin’s upper tier here — more premium than three quarters of the Speake-Marin watches we list, which start at £16,339.
Price range £16,339 to £37,426 across 15 Speake-Marin watches in stock. The Kármán Line is the boundary at 100 kilometres where atmosphere gives way to space, and Speake-Marin has used it to frame a watch that is genuinely about that threshold rather than merely named after it. The dial is sapphire crystal rather than a conventional surface: blue metallisation on one face, a sunray finish and Côtes de Genève decoration on the reverse, so depth and light shift together depending on the angle. The minute flange carries a blue PVD opal microbeaded finish that traces the dial's outer edge like the line the watch is named for. At 6.3mm, the case is strikingly flat for something housing an automatic movement, and that is entirely down to the SMA06 calibre. Speake-Marin built the movement in-house at 2.5mm thin, integrating a tungsten micro-rotor — weighted enough to wind reliably at that scale, small enough not to demand depth — which allows the cushion case to sit almost flush against the wrist. The micro-rotor itself is finished with alternating rhodium and blue PVD rectangles, visible through the dial's transparency in the right light. The bracelet is integrated and made from 904L steel, the same grade used throughout the case, with micro-adjustment in the clasp so the fit can be dialled in precisely rather than settled for.

Learn more about Speake-Marin
Peter Speake-Marin trained at Hackney Technical College in London, spent years restoring antique watches on Piccadilly and later worked at Renaud et Papi, the complications workshop behind much of the industry's most difficult work. He founded his own brand in Switzerland in 2002.
The house style was established early and has stayed: the Piccadilly case with its distinctive stepped bezel, the topping tool motif taken from a watchmaker's own bench, and heart-shaped bridges visible through the back.
Christelle Rosnoblet bought the company in 2012 and built a movement workshop in the Neuchâtel region, moving it from assembling supplied calibres towards developing and finishing its own.
The output is deliberately small and deliberately difficult — tourbillons, minute repeaters, the Vertical Double Tourbillon, and an Art Series with hand-sculpted dials. These are watches made in dozens rather than thousands.
Peter Speake-Marin himself has since moved on to other projects; the brand he named continues in Geneva.

Frequently asked questions, and things you should know about this watch
Can I swim with it?
Showering yes, swimming no. 50m covers splashes and brief immersion, but a swimming stroke generates well above the pressure that figure describes.
Water resistance explainedWill the glass scratch?
Unlikely. Sapphire is second only to diamond in hardness and shrugs off everyday marking.
Sapphire, mineral and acrylic comparedDoes it need a battery?
No. It is automatic — the motion of your wrist winds it, and there is no cell to replace.
Quartz, automatic and solar comparedHow long does it run for when it's not worn?
About 52 hours fully wound — enough to survive a night off the wrist, but not a full weekend.
Is it a men's or women's watch?
Listed as men's.
