Stepping up in Bremont's range
The MB series has always worn its Martin-Baker connection literally: every watch in it is issued to aircrew who have used the ejection seat, and the Gloster Meteor — Britain's first operational jet, and the aircraft from which the first live ejection test was conducted in 1946 — gives this version its name. The Altitude is the most developed form that lineage has taken, with a re-engineered Trip-Tick case running to a tighter lug-to-lug distance than its predecessors, two crowns positioned at 2 and 4 o'clock for winding and bezel control without hand-crossing, and a rubber-mounted BB14 movement that absorbs shock the way a seat designed to fire a pilot clear of a disintegrating aircraft probably should. The 68-hour reserve means a weekend off the wrist costs nothing on Monday morning. Grade 2 titanium at 42mm wears lighter than the diameter suggests, and the bracelet — new to this generation, with curved articulating bars — moves with the wrist rather than against it. On the dial, the lollipop seconds hand carries its striped ejection-handle counterweight in black and white, which is either the most knowing detail in British watchmaking or simply a very good seconds hand, depending on your disposition. Through the caseback, the BB14 presents in gunmetal with Geneva stripes, ringed by a soft-iron anti-magnetic shield that functions on Faraday cage principles — engineering made visible for its own sake, not decoration.

Nick and Giles English founded Bremont in 2002, four years after their father died in a plane crash that Nick survived. All three had restored and flown vintage aircraft together, and the brand that emerged is inseparable from that. The name comes from Antoine Bremont, a French farmer who sheltered the brothers after an emergency landing.
Bremont set out to rebuild British watchmaking, which had effectively ended in the twentieth century. The early watches used Swiss movements in British-designed cases, with the Trip-Tick three-part case construction and a hardened outer barrel treated to over 2000 Vickers.
The military and aviation work is real rather than thematic. Bremont holds contracts with squadrons across the RAF, the US Air Force, and other services, producing issued watches for specific units, and has made watches for Martin-Baker ejection seat survivors — tested to the ejection forces themselves.
The company has also built watches incorporating material from historical objects: oak and copper from HMS Victory, aluminium from the Wright Flyer, and steel from Bletchley Park.
The manufacturing ambition advanced with the opening of a facility in Henley and the release of the ENG300 series in 2021, the first Bremont movement designed and largely made in England. Production is in the low tens of thousands annually.
