Speake-Marin is a small London-founded manufacture that has operated for much of its life outside the mainstream, and the One & Two collection sits at the centre of what the brand argues a watch should be: a mechanical object whose construction is the display, rather than something hidden behind a dial. The openworked SMA01 carries that argument literally — the barrel is engraved with the house's stated values, RESPECT and CREATIVITE, visible through the movement rather than printed on a surface. The Piccadilly case in Grade 5 titanium is the detail worth dwelling on. At 10.5mm across 42mm of diameter, it wears flatter and lighter than the skeletonised movement inside might suggest, and the sandblasted finish gives the case a matte, almost industrial restraint that keeps the eye on the dial rather than the surround. The small seconds counter sits at 1:30 — an unconventional position that reads as a deliberate displacement, part of the same contrarian logic that runs through the whole design. Heart-shaped hands in PVD-coated black are a house signature and read more clearly against the open movement than conventional sword hands would. The SMA01 is regulated to COSC chronometer standards and runs a fully integrated micro-rotor, which is how Speake-Marin maintains that flat profile without sacrificing winding efficiency.
