The Aluminium line began in 1998 as a deliberate provocation: a Swiss luxury watch built not from steel or gold but from a material associated with aircraft and kitchen foil. It found an audience that extended well beyond the usual one, and Bvlgari has been adding to it ever since. This 2021 reference introduced a second time zone to the collection, with the inner 24-hour ring reading in the blue-and-red arrangement that watch people will immediately recognise from the GMT-Master lineage. At 9.7mm thick and 68.6 grams complete, the case sits as close to the wrist as anything in this category. The aluminium mid-case is paired with a titanium caseback and crown, which is a practical trade-off: aluminium is soft and benefits from reinforcement at the points of wear. The integrated rubber strap carries embedded aluminium links, so the transition from case to wrist reads as continuous rather than joined — the articulation means it conforms rather than clamps. The second time zone function is set via the crown without disturbing the running seconds, which is the right way to do it for a watch worn across time zones rather than one bought for the complication itself.

Sotirio Bulgari was a silversmith from a village in Epirus who arrived in Rome and opened a shop on Via Sistina in 1884, later moving to the Via Condotti address the company still occupies. The Latinised V in the logo is a deliberate reference to classical Rome, and the house has drawn on Roman architecture and coinage ever since.
Two designs define it. The Serpenti, a coiled snake bracelet watch that first appeared in the 1940s, is the piece most associated with the name. The Bvlgari Bvlgari of 1975, with the brand name doubled around the bezel in the manner of a Roman coin inscription, began as a limited run for clients and became a permanent line.
Watchmaking became serious in 2000, when Bvlgari bought Gérald Genta and Daniel Roth and with them a genuine complications capability. Since 2014 the Octo Finissimo has set a series of world records for thinness across different complications — tourbillon, minute repeater, automatic, chronograph — which is not the sort of thing a jeweller was expected to be doing.
